Furnas Boutique Hotel is located in São Miguel, the largest island in the archipelago, with 62.1 kilometers in length and 15.8 kilometers in maximum width. São Miguel forms the Eastern Group of the Azores Archipelago together with the island of Santa Maria, located 81 km away. The highest point on the island, at an altitude of 1105 m, is located on Pico da Vara, at 37°48'34'' north latitude and 25°12'40'' west longitude.
The profile of São Miguel is marked by two mountainous areas separated by a low altitude platform. Called Ilha Verde, the landscape is characterized by extensive meadows and patches of forest forcibly implanted in the valleys of streams and in areas of difficult access.
In São Miguel live the great lagoons of the Azores, housed in volcanic calderas of kilometric dimensions. The most emblematic resides in Sete Cidades. The charm continues in Lagoa do Fogo, which shows a wilder character. In the Furnas volcano, the lagoon occupies a privileged position and stands out for its extension, surrounded by lush and extravagant vegetation, which lives up to the nickname of “Vale Formoso” in this area of São Miguel. The natural hot water pools are one of the wonders of nature in São Miguel, offered “à la carte” in a diversified menu.
High cliffs lined with green forests, black basalt tips that penetrate the sea, promontories and sweet coves, challenging fajãs and countless beaches of gray volcanic sand, are brushstrokes of the coastline of São Miguel that deserve a look and a carefree visit.
The size of the island and the diversity of infrastructure and services it offers make São Miguel an experiential island and an authentic gateway to the active discovery of the Azorean archipelago, with many activities that you can do.
